Review: The Wizard and the slug

The wizard and the slug is a side scroller, 2D platformer game developed by Silkworm and published by Meridian4. This game was released on the 2nd of November, costing only € 8,20 on Steam. You will be playing (mostly) as the most agile and cutest slug you have ever played as (probably also the only one.. but he’s still really cute, haha). Jokes aside, this game is indeed a platformer but is it challenging enough to hook you? And does all the humor in this game succeed in being funny? Find out below!

We played The Wizard and the Slug for 5.5 hours on PC.

What we liked!

  • Gameplay design and music: I enjoyed the gameplay here a lot. You start as a giant slug, and when you attack, you shoot a piece of yourself (so I guess slime/goo?) at your enemy, and over time you regenerate this back. When you fire, you turn smaller, and you can do this twice before you are the smallest you can be. When you are tiny, you lose HP when hit, which you can do twice before dying and having to start over at your last checkpoint. I found this a fun way of gameplay. Even though it was frustrating at some points where I got stuck, I loved the caution I had to have when being tiny. And the giant balls of steel I had when being big, haha. I also wanted to mention that the music is beautiful throughout the entire game. It’s different on every level, and I thought I had to say it because I found it that good.
  • Ability upgrades: At the start of your journey, you only have a basic attack. But after a while, you will get a dash, a shotgun kind of shot, and a fireball shot! Not only is this incredibly fun, but you also need to learn what enemies need which attack to take damage! Yes, you read that correctly; some enemies don’t take damage AT ALL from, for example, your normal attack. This increases the difficulty quite a bit, and I enjoyed that.
  • Boss fights: Boss fights are really enjoyable in this game. I was always looking forward to the next boss! They are all unique in visuals as well as mechanics and story. For example, there is this huge bird that asks the wizard if he can feed you to her babies. After some thinking, the wizard says no, and that’s when the fight starts. In this specific fight, the wizard will help you by shielding you while the bird is trying to tackle you and throw you in lava by flapping her wings! This fight even has a second part! I found it a lot of fun looking at what attack works the best on what boss, what they do, and how to react.
  • Story: The story starts off like any other. The player meets another person, and they go on a journey. The wizard also doesn’t tell you what you are helping her with at the start. Well, I can tell you that you are going with her to save her friends who are captured by someone she escaped from. You can feel that there is a lot of passion in this story. I’ve seen other people say they disliked it, but I beg to differ. The main story is beautiful, and the end gave me goosebumps. Spoiler: The real end, that is, not the first end.
  • Friends: Finally, some friends, guys! Haha, just kidding (sorry.) But on your journey, you will meet some people that will join you in your adventure. And unlike other games where they stand there and do nothing, these guys will help you. Some will help you in combat, for example, by knocking them out or simply doing damage. Others will help you with jumping puzzles. This all adds to the lively feeling of the game. There are so many other characters in the game, and it was a real joy to meet all of them.

Somewhere between

  • Humour: I’m not sure what to think of the humor of this game. Sometimes it made me smile, but most of the time, I was just… confused. I’m not sure if I didn’t catch the jokes because my English isn’t good enough or if it was just not my kind of humor. Of course, everyone finds different things funny, so I cannot judge for others. This is just me telling you all that this game was overall not funny to me. So, there was a lot of bashing keys to get through “Funny moments” for me.

What we disliked

  • There was nothing I disliked so much it needs to be here. Only the humor I wasn’t sure about, but others could very well laugh their ass off.

CONCLUSION

80%

If you can ignore or enjoy the humor in this game, I would recommend this game. I adored most of the characters, and the first ending almost made me cry. It’s a good 5 or 6 hours of fun for € 8,20. The Wizard and the Slug is filled with good platforming, boss fights, and story. And this all is made by one person called Silkworm working on this game for years. That deserves some credit, in my opinion.
