Review | The Wardrobe – Even Better Edition

LifeisXbox’s The Wardrobe – Even Better Edition review | Imagine going on a picnic with your best friend, you are having the time of your life and to celebrate your friendship you brought along 2 lovely plums. Little didn’t you know it would kill your best friend because he is allergic. Well, exactly this happened to Ronald who sort of killed his friend Skinny in CINIC Games’ The Wardrobe – Even Better Edition. In a journey to save Ronald’s soul from eternal damnation, Skinny has to make sure Ronald admits his ‘crime’.

ℹ️ | We played The Wardrobe – Even Better Edition for 4 hours Xbox. This game is also available on PC, Nintendo Switch, and soon on PlayStation.

What we liked!

  • Graphics | The cartoon style that The Wardrobe – Even Better Edition is designed in is simply amazing. The game already starts with a really cool introduction that sets the mood perfectly. If you are playing this game and have progressed a little bit further into the story, the only thing that you can say is that it is a match made in heaven. The developers use a lot of pop culture references which are implemented in funny ways but you can still clearly see from what movie/series they have been taken. Also, the characthers that you encounter during your playthrough are shaped in a way which brings memories back from those good old cartoon series back in the 90s.
  • Sounds | The background music in this game is a pleasure to hear. It changes when you enter a different area of the game but in its core, it is still the same funky loop that is playing and really brings across what the developers wanted to reach, a fun and humoreus experience. But this is not the only thing, The Wardrobe is fully voice-acted, and not just any voices no, every single one of them suits the charachter just perfectly. Even the banter between the narrator and the main characther Skinny makes sure you will have a great laugh playing this game.
  • References | The Wardrobe – Even Better Edition is filled with pop culture references. They literally throw them at you like it is nothing. In my opinion you have a few catogories in this. You can have some games where it’s a lot and at some point it gets annoying, and then there is this game which has so much subtle and less subtle references, its just fantastic. Billy’s tricycle with a blood trail from the Saw movies, a caged Hedwig from Harry Potter (Maui made me mention this because Harry Potter), the blue french horn from How I Met Your Mother and a lot more. Like a lot lot. Just keep your eyes open at all times and you’ll discover a storm of references throughout the entire game.
  • Gameplay | We have praised the game a lot already (which it deserves). But we haven’t talked about what kind of game The Wardrobe – Even Better Edition actually is. This is a 2D point & click game. Your main goal is to get to your friend Ronald and make him admit that he fed you the plum which ended up killing you. On your journey you will encounter a lot of hilarious interactions which make for a great laugh. All the references or interactions with objects or other characthers are amazing. The developers really turned a simple point and click game into a hilarious experience for its players.

Somewhere between

  • Short and limited replayability | Personally, I’m fairly good at this type of game so I completed the game in about 4 hours. Which to me is a little bit short, especially since I was liking everything the game was offering so much. A typical player will probably take arround 5 to 6 hours to complete the entire storyline, which of course is a little bit longer but still fairly short. Also the game isn’t really replayable, after you ocmpleted the journey once, you know how to push through. Yes, you can play it again and take your time discovering all the references, but the fun of getting to new parts of the story is gone. For players like, replayability will also increase because of the achievements, but I think for most, this won’t be the case. I make connections rather quickly, so I don’t have to try everything out, which also made me miss out on a lot of achievements. For me personally, a replay would be more valuable because there are still so many achievements left to unlock. However, players who have a harder time at connections will probably get most achievements during their first playthrough.
