LifeisXbox’s Streets of Rage 4 Mr. X Nightmare DLC review | Did we get a better nostalgia kick than Streets of Rage 4 last year? I don’t think so! What an epic game that was and it was awesome to see such impressive critics and player’s feedback. Mr. X Nightmare manages to improve the overall quality even more, at a very low price of €8. Here’s what you get, three new characters, a new fantastic survival mode, weekly challenges, and the ability to create your own fighting style.
This is a short review, our usual the good, mixed and the bad was difficult because of the nature of this game.
Starting with the new game mode, Survival. Developer Dotemu did some work here to make it special. Each round you’ll need to defeat a few enemies, when you beat all of them you go to another round. Thing is that between those round you can pick a new powerup or weapon to make things easier for you. Surviving wave after wave becomes harder and harder as dangerous enemies continue to spawn and the arena comes with fire or poison hazards. They did a neat trick to switch up the round visually too, all of a sudden you stand in a much older visual pixel style for example. It keeps things fresh and once again they created a visual masterpiece.
The more you play the more fighting moves you unlock too, depending on how much EXP you earn. This is another reason why the game stays fresh even if you played it for hours and hours. Also new are three new playable characters, that have a nice mix of playstyles. Estele, who was already a boss character in Streets of Rage 4 is now playable and her slow but powerful style is really fun to play. A recreated Max and a boss from the past Shiva returns too. I am sure even the Flash from DC has a hard time keeping up with Shiva. Seriously… this dude is FAST! Three new characters might seem a bit on the low side but the range of playstyles gives it a lot of satisfying content.
Even if you aren’t interested in spending more money on Streets of Rage 4 there’s new stuff to check out as an existing player. There’s a new difficulty, called Mania+ and I honestly don’t get how anyone can finish this.. I guess I’m getting slow with age. (even with Shiva)
