Review | Parasomnia Verum

LifeisXbox’s Parasomnia Verum review | Halloween was just last week and since we are still in the spooky vibe, we reviewed a spooky game. Vidas Salavejus released Parasomnia Verum last June on PC and as of last month, the game is also available on the Nintendo Switch. In this game, you go on an adventure to find out what’s up with your recurring nightmare but things quickly go downhill from there, and soon you won’t know what is real anymore.

This is a short review, our usual the good, mixed and the bad was difficult because of the nature of this game. We played Parasomnia Verum for 30 minutes on the Nintendo Switch and was completed in full. This game is also available on PC.

Parasomnia Verum is a very short horror game, and when I say very short I mean that you easily complete it in about 30 minutes. In the game, you play as Maddy who has the same recurring nightmare over and over again and she wants to figure out what is happening to her. In order to do so, she goes to professor Wilbur whose research should help her find out what it is. But here things are getting twisted and you quickly forget if you are living in an actual dream, whether you are dreaming at that point or everything is still the reality. In this game, you control Maddy, and you have to solve little puzzles or gather some needed items, but other than that, it is more of a storytelling game where there isn’t much gameplay. The story sounds amazing and looks promising, but it stops there. In reality, the execution is very weak, most of the time you have no idea of what is happening, and the ending is even worse, I got the feeling as if there should be another part at the end but they just skipped that. I was left very confused both during and after the game, and this was a real shame as there was a decent buildup to the story.

Graphics-wise I’m also not sure what to make of Parasomnia Verum. There are basically 2 areas in which you play. The first one is Maddy’s apartment, which looks nice, finished and a lot of details are there. Second, you play in some sort of abandoned hospital, which is dark but I can’t really tell anything special about it. It is just long halls with occasionally a bench or a plant and that’s like 90% of it. The thing that I most disliked was the fact it was really dark and I had trouble seeing things. Especially if you play this game during the day, it’s often as if the screen is completely dark and I was left a bit disappointed. Sound-wise, Parasomnia Verum was actually a pleasant experience for me. There is no music or whatsoever playing in the game. It’s just the noises you make while walking around or interacting with objects and sometimes ominous sound effects when something spooky is about to happen. I had a lot of jump scares, but then again, I’m very easily affected by these.

60%

Parasomnia Verum, a strange game where you get lost between what’s real and what’s a nightmare. The story has great potential but unfortunately, the execution isn’t that good and the ending feels a bit off. However, the sound effects that are used in this game are really good, and if you like short horror stories it’s a game that’s worth exploring.
