Review | Out of Line

LifeisXbox’s Out of Line review | So I understand that most of you have played some puzzle games, and also some platformers. And all of that is great. But what if I told you that most of these experiences will be outclassed by a single game that is just unique? That game is called Out of Line and is made by the lovely people over at Nerd Monkeys. But what got me all that excited about a simple game? Let’s go over that together, shall we!

We played Out of Line for 6 hours on Steam. This game is also available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows.

What we liked!

  • Suttle Story | So let’s get right to business. When you play Out of Line, the last thing you expect is a deep connection to some random 2D NPC. And you for sure don’t expect it to feel like a story of fear and betrayal, with a flair of hope. Yet, that is exactly what I felt while playing my way through this little gem. So if a story without words but only scenery and events is a big win for you, then you can’t go wrong with Out of Line!
  • Music | While you play a game meant to connect with the player, music is a powerful tool. And I will be the one to tell all of you that the music feels well chosen. It’s a calm mix of tunes that change based on the environment and turn of events. The classic blend here, but it can be a natural killer if executed this well!
  • Artstyle | On to the custom artwork we go! Out of Line is filled with custom artwork and scenery. There wasn’t a single moment in my 6 hours of playtime that I felt visually bored. Everything was literally eye-candy to admire! If you just take a quick look at the screenshots on steam and in this review, there shouldn’t be anything else to add. And trust me, it’s even more stunning when you see it all move and come together.
  • Evolving mechanics | What surprised me the most is that during your playthrough, is that you learn new mechanics. It isn’t all too fancy, but I honestly thought I would be using just my spear the whole game. So finding out that there are different mechanics/power-ups to discover and multiple things to do with numerous spears was thrilling! It just straight up made me appreciate the game even more.
  • Controller support | This might be a minor point for some, but it’s quite a big one for me. When a game claims to be fully controller supported, I do expect it to be this way. I want to be able to lay in my bed, turn on my tv, and play that lovely game right from there on my big screen. And I sure could with Out of Line. It takes a bit of getting used to, but it maps out the way it should!

Somewhere between

  • Nothing | I couldn’t find something that actually got me worked up to the point that I find it mixed. Most of the game was super positive, and for the bad points, you can read up on those below!

What we disliked

  • Currency | Something I just miss in some of these games is a form of currency. Something to make your performance feel worthwhile. It wasn’t that required in Out of Line, and that is a good thing, but it takes away from the game’s replay value. So currently, you play to just straight up enjoy the game without any pressure. Again, this is amazing for most players, but it takes away an element that some competitive platformers seek.

CONCLUSION

Out of Line is something for you if you are a fan of little story games! And enjoy a good puzzle. But yet, you think like a platformer veteran. It truly is a unique game that fits in with young and old players alike. The visuals make it a great family game that almost screams to be played on a big screen, but the complexity of the puzzles will make you crunch your brain. So what are you waiting for?
