One of my fellow Belgian people decided to make a weird, funny and unexpected game. Introducing Lancelot’s Hangover: The Quest for the Holy Booze by Jean-Baptiste de Clerfayt. As he himself describes it, it’s a ‘Monkey Island meets Monty Python’s Holy Grail’ comedy point and click adventure. You have one simple goal: find the Holy Grail, gather all the naked girls, and throw the biggest party England has ever known. All the art, animations, sound, code, dialogue, and music was made by one single guy, which is quite impressive! It says this guy is high on drugs 14 hours a day, and if you play the game, you won’t doubt this at all. Anyway, let’s talk a little more about the pro’s and cons of this silly game.
What we liked!
- Funny: Obviously, this a very silly and weird game. Luckily, this works here. Lancelot’s Hangover is a funny game filled with puns and basic humor. If you’re a fan of Monty Python humor, you’ll have a great time with this game. It doesn’t involve a lot of thinking, obviously, when it comes to the humor.
- Puzzles: This is a point and click adventure where you’ll be clicking around A LOT. Luckily, the map isn’t too big so there’s only so many places and people you can visit. You’ll have to preform certain tasks in order to get to the next challenge. This will basically mean that you’ll gather items, try them on each other and various people, until you find the solution. The puzzles aren’t always easy, and I had a really difficult time in the beginning figuring everything out. I had to use the walkthrough provided by the developer a few times, but I got the hang of it eventually (kind of). It’s just a very silly mindset that you’ll need to get into, let me tell you.
Somewhere between
- Graphics: The graphics are unique, and just as silly as the rest of the game. Everything is set in Medieval times, which I adore, but I didn’t always like the artstyle. Don’t expect high-end graphics, because this is just a funny game and that’s the biggest focus of the game. Lancelot himself will only be wearing a pink speedy for most of the game, so you know, it’s all very foolish. I guess you will either love or hate the graphical style that’s being used in Lancelot’s Hangover
- Point and click: This is a point and click adventure game, so that’s all you’ll be doing. It’s all very straightforward, but sometimes playing this way didn’t feel smooth at all. My character walked very, very slow at times, so when I wanted to walk to another part of the screen, I had to keep clicking in little bits, because I have no patience. I do want to add that a helpful mechanism was put into place: when pressing the space bar, you see everything that is clickable on your screen.
What we disliked
- Too short for its price: According to the Steam page, the gameplay will be between 3 and 6 hours, which seems about right. Depending on how quickly you figure everything out, you’ll either be stuck at certain points quite long, or you’ll figure something out right away. However, this game costs 12 Euros, and has no replay value at all (unless you’re maybe an achievement hunter because I ended up only getting 18 out of 21 achievements). It’s just not worth it for this price, in my opinion.
