Review | Howloween Hero

LifeisXbox’s Howloween Hero review | I just can’t seem to get enough of Halloween, so why not try out another Halloween-themed game? And what if said game also involves a dog as the protagonist? Well, that just means I’m completely sold on the idea already, that’s for sure. Howloween Hero, a game by Gossamer Games, is an adorable trick-or-treat adventure where you, a mischievous puppy, is tasked with the mission to track down your owner’s favorite candy! It sounds promising enough so I was definitely excited to get started on this one.

This is a short review, our usual the good, mixed and the bad was difficult because of the nature of this game.

First of all, Howloween Hero is very easy to play as you’ll only be walking around, talking to people, and picking up stuff. So you’ll only need your arrow keys and space bar. There is a ‘how to play’ section in the menu, but this game doesn’t have a tutorial to start off with. It doesn’t need one either, because I immediately figured out what to do, so that was very intuitive. As mentioned in the intro, it’s your goal to collect tons and tons of candy for your human, but it’s Halloween, so you’ll need to dress up. Your first costume is going to be a simple sheet, which is fine because more costumes can be bought with candy later on. Think about dressing up as a spider or a mermaid. And what is cool about this, is that you can combine elements from certain sets of costumes with each other, creating your own spooky monster.

Now, getting candy is quite easy. There’s a lot of candy just scattered around in the streets, or you can go trick or treating and visit people’s houses. Another way to get candy is by completing (simple) quests, which you’ll stumble upon when talking to people. Howloween Hero is not linear, so you can walk around freely and do whatever you please, picking up and finishing quests whenever you want. There is one main story quest and if you finish this one, the game ends, but you can just dive back in if you wish to get all those achievements, so no worries.

The graphics weren’t my favorite, as the dog isn’t very detailed, but it’s a short and cheaper game, so I didn’t really mind. I enjoyed the experience still, and the spooky soundtrack was nice. What bothered me a little more, is that Howloween Hero is rather on the short side. It took me about 45 minutes to complete this game, and if I were to go for all achievements, I think another 30 to 45 minutes would be enough. I felt like it was just a bit too short, to be honest because I was just getting into it, but hey, it was fun nonetheless.
