LifeisXbox’s Barry the Bunny review | Another basic platformer from Ratalakai, I honestly lost count of how many they ported this year. Developer LightUP’s Barry the Bunny is a charming game that uses retro gaming mechanics and nice-looking 2D visuals, similar as Mario on Gameboy Color. A simple and super fast completion game, something Ratalaika is known for.
This is a short review, our usual the good, mixed and the bad was difficult because of the nature of this game. We played Barry the Bunny for 2 hours on Xbox Series X.
Barry the Bunny is a fine example of how simplistic something can be, enemies don’t give any challenge and the platforming is a piece of cake. It is hard to stay interested in Barry as it is definitely too easy. Sadly the main attraction here is a quick one hour 1000 Gamerscore completion. I don’t mind the marketing idea behind that BUT the quality of the game must be present and that’s not the case with this one.
This is a cheap purchase (€5) so it soothes the negativity a little and not everything is bad about Barry the Bunny. It takes you back in the past with some big retro influences, visually and sound seems to be straight out of the NES-era. Something I loved was saving the rabbits in every level, your task is to find three pieces of wood and built a bridge with it, so a rabbit can reach his home again. Why all the bridges are gone and why bats, snakes and whatever else attacks you is a mystery though. And that’s about all there is to write about Barry the Bunny, if you ever played a Ratalaika platformer before you know what to expect.
