One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 was one of the games that we played at the Bandai Namco Gamescom press briefing. This popular franchise has been dormant for four years so the reveal in July was met with a lot of happy gamers. We got to play a very short section of the game and while it is obviously far from finished I really enjoyed my time with Luffy.
Pirate Warriors 4 is made by Koei Tecmo and mentioning that you should already know that this will be a Musou game. Here you will fight hundred of enemies at the same time with powerful attacks, making you feel like a God. You could say it is a Dynasty Warriors game with a One Piece skin. The battle system feels similar with pressing the X or Y-button for attack combo’s pressing XY launches an enemy pressing XXY did an area of attack move.
We could only play as Luffy but many more will be playable upon release, once I dropped into the game I was happy with the colorful world that literally screamed One Piece. While killing all the enemies was an easy task the boss fight against Big Mom was an entirely different experience. Not an easy one either, in this fight you really need to use your powerful transformation moves and avoid whatever Big Mom launches at you. I had lots of fun and really adored the visual style, there were some performance issues but that’s completely normal this early in development, One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 is set for release in 2020.
