Are you into fantasy? More specifically, are you very much into dragons? Well, Dreaming Door Studios (hello, this developers studio’s name fits in perfectly with the atmosphere of this game) has a brand new game for you: Golden Treasure: The Great Green. As the developers themselves describe it, it’s a game for those who carry dragons in their hearts. You play as a young dragon growing up in a world where both good and bad need to be balanced, where various creatures live together and where survival is key. Golden Treasure: The Great Green is not your average game. Let’s go.

Beautiful hand-painted graphics: The art style used in Golden Treasure: The Great Green must be one of the most beautiful ones I’ve ever seen. The amazing clear colors and subtle details make sure you enjoy every single second of looking at this game. The pictures are all hand-painted and sometimes involve a little movement. It’s safe to say that the art style is the strongest part of this game.
The writing: In a game that has a lot of writing, it’s very important to keep your reader interested. There are so many games out there so players can quickly switch to any other game if they get bored. It seems like the writers here nailed this part. Since the game is set in a fantasy world where you play as a dragon, hatching from an egg at the beginning of the game, fantasy writing is key here. Everything is expressed from the dragon’s point of view and is simply beautifully written. Because of all the detail that was put into the scenarios, you really feel invested in this game.

More a visual novel than an RPG game: This game will definitely not for everyone. Even though the game is a mix of RPG and narrative, it leans more towards a visual novel. It’s a lot of pictures and writing, and let’s face it, not everyone is a fan of reading a lot during a game. The gameplay is minimal, so don’t expect too much active engagement. I’m going to be honest, I was a bit disappointed by the lack of gameplay. And I do enjoy reading, just not that much in a game.
Three lives: You get three lives before you have to start again from the beginning. Dying can be a result of starvation, combat or various choices you make throughout the story. This is one of the few gameplay parts of the game and was probably implemented to make sure players were feeling more involved. So, after dying three times you start over. This kind of totally sucks because you’ll have to go through ALL that text you went through before. And when first testing the game, you might just die quite a few times before you get the hang of it.

Limited actual gameplay: The limited gameplay really got to me, so I’m going to put this in the bad section. I know that some people will disagree with this, and that’s fine, really. You explore, go out for hunting, take a rest, etc. But you know, it all feels very limited. The immense amount of text got in the way of really enjoying the gameplay part of this game.
Short days: Why do days in Golden Treasure go by so damn fast? So many things to do, so little time. I mean, some simple tasks take a whole ass day. Also, when you want to explore a new area, you can click it but you have to wait a day before you can actually go exploring. This really feels like a complete day that gets wasted.

Score: 70%
I’m sure my score can seem confusing. I only put two points in the good section, and four in the mixed and bad section. Then why does this game get 70%, you ask? It’s a good game, it’s just not for everyone. Even people who aren’t into these types of games will see that a lot of hard work was put into this game. You’ll also have to admit that this is simply beautifully designed and written. So okay, the game lacks in some ways and not all the aspects will appeal to everyone. If you’re not sure about this game, go try out the demo that the developers are offering. You get to play one-third of the game, so you’ll get a sense of what it’s like. I highly recommend downloading the demo as a start, even if it’s just to enjoy the art style, and then you can still decide whether Golden Treasure: The Great Green is a good fit for you or not.
