Eyes on the Week (5th-9th August)

It’s time to look back on the week we’ve just had! What did the weekdays look like for our writers? What was the biggest news from the week? and what are we looking forward to playing during the upcoming weekend? Our Eyes on the Week article will answer all three of these questions!

We’re curious about your opinion and played games, so be sure to share your stuff on our social media channels!

The same as last week for me in terms of video games! The First Descendant is still very much in my sights. Now the main campaign has been completed, it’s on to grinding for resources, components, and various other items. Currently, me and Lewis are working towards our achievements which require Crystallisation Catalysts and Energy Activators. I’m also hoping to unlock Valby soon as she looks super cool and cute! I’m not too interested in the ultimate versions at this moment in time but maybe in the future when I don’t have much else to do. Or, maybe, I’ll be lucky and get them as I progress?

I’ve also been continuing my cooking adventures in Yum Yum Cookstar. I’ve finally managed to start unlocking the tournaments for achievements which accounts for 90% of the achievements so I’ve got away from my 2% progress – up to 26% now. All the tournaments require you to complete three varying recipes in a row on the hardest difficulty without failing any steps so I’m a little apprehensive on just how hard some of the later stages could be.

Most interesting news of this week: Dead by Daylight has extended their 2v8 mode until the 15th August which many are overjoyed about. Control 2 has moved into its “production readiness stage” which is exciting to hear.

Looking forward to playing: The First Descendant is a definite. Yum Yum Cookstar is a certainty. As for anything else, nothing is planned other than perhaps returning to backlog games.

I’m on my holidays in Spain and I brought my Switch along. Trying to beat Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door on it, but I keep falling asleep (life is hard with two young kids).

Just before I left home I started playing 2 new games which I hope to review for LifeIsXbox soon: Slash Quest on PC. A fun adventure in which you play as a growing & talking sword. And Phantom Spark, a fast racing game with an Xbox release.

Most interesting news of this week: I’m finally taking a holiday again after 6 years! That’s news, right? 😆

Looking forward to playing: All of the above!

I’m still playing the System Shock remake and although I’m still enjoying it, there were a few times when I got so lost that I had to Google what I needed to do next.

I started playing Tunic on Xbox both because I needed a game to get a quick achievement and because it’s been on my list for a long time. I’m finding it quite interesting so far, despite not having played a whole lot.

Most interesting news of this week: Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy coming to Xbox Game Pass.

Looking forward to playing: More System Shock Remake and Tunic.

This week was filled with awesome games! And 2 of them also launched on Xbox Game Pass!

I started this week with Closer the Distance. What an emotional and heartbreaking story but the game is so well made. I cried so many times while playing this but was also impressed by how good the developers are at telling a deep story. They did the same back in the day with the Orwell games. In this game, you help people get past their grief after you die, and this is done in a Sims-like style. I hope we will see more games that will implement Sims-like mechanics into storytelling games.

The second game I played this week was Creatures of Ava. I have been so hyped for this game, the looks, the idea, the cute creatures! Gladly I wasn’t disappointed at all. What an amazing game and it launched also on Game Pass.

And last but not least, I played Cat Quest 3. What an amazing game. So many secrets, and such cute artwork and I love the open world and the ship combat. And let’s not furrrget all the cat puns!

Most interesting news of this week: Debug Magazine getting through the stock of the 5th magazine in such a short amount of time. I hope people will discover Debug Magazine as well as Patch Magazine after the closure of Game Informer.

Looking forward to playing: Just Crow Things, so excited to see how you’ll be naughty as a crow. This is from the team that made “Rain on Your Parade”.

This week I’ve been playing the new season of Apex Legends, which features an awesome new map set in a late-night city environment, also with the new season are some big gameplay changes such as the ability to duel wield some handguns when firing from the hip. The added option to respawn in trios mode provided at least one of your teammates are still alive. Another new addition that I really like is the option to earn the premium battle pass by playing the game, which took me around 5 hours to earn.

Another game that I have started this week is called Creatures of AVA, new on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. I’m still pretty early on but I have really enjoyed my time exploring Ava so far. I have also been playing Cilla which is a 2D side-scrolling shooter. You play as a super soldier and must defend against an extraterrestrial threat, for a low-budget indie game it features a good story with tons of narrative as you play.

Most interesting news of this week: During QuakeCon, id Sofware revealed Doom 1 and 2 Enhanced, a combo pack of the first two games in the long-running first-person shooter franchise. Best of all, it’s available now on Xbox Game Pass, plus other platforms.

Looking forward to playing: More Creatures of AVA, Apex Legends and Resident Evil 4.
