Review Boom Ball 2 for Kinect | I have said it so much, so excuse me for repeating myself but Virtual Air Guitar, the studio behind Boom Ball 2 for Kinect is one of the few reasons why Kinect is still alive and breathing. They keep bringing out enjoyable motion controlled games that everyone can play. Such a strength for Xbox One, it’s sad that Microsoft doesn’t seem to realise that Kinect has the power to bring people together in ways that nothing else can. So my biggest thanks to Virtual Air Guitar for their stubborn development for Kinect, they bring friends together, people who normally don’t even think about playing a video game. THE GOOD
- Boom Ball 2 for Kinect is basically Arkanoid in 3D that you control with your Kinect device. You move your hands and try to aim the ball towards blocks that can be destroyed. It’s such a super easy and fun concept and everyone can play it. In a figure of speech even your canary can play this game with his wings.
- New for Boom Ball 2 is the ability to play with a friend, I reviewed the first Boom Ball for another site and that was one of my complains. so I’m very excited that two players can now play together, in a cooperative way. Just try to be careful that you don’t give your younger brother a blue eye 😉
- I really like the child friendly colorful graphics, it’s cute to see faces on the blocks and the level design is pretty spot on with all the different themes. It’s clear that many time was spent on creating original levels.
- Finishing a level is pretty easy, getting all-stars on them is pretty hard. Making it a perfect game for everyone. Big fans will love swinging their way for getting all-stars and regular gamers will enjoy not getting stuck on a specific level.
Mixed Feelings
- One of the things I would really like to see is a simple level creator. I don’t think it can be that difficult to create levels for your friends or kids. It would bring replay value and who doesn’t want to make some Halo or Mario themed levels? This might be asking much but it is one of the biggest things I miss in the Boom Ball franchise.
THE BAD
- Boom Ball 2 for Kinect is made for short gaming sessions. You don’t do much else besides breaking blocks, sadly things become very repetitive after a while. This will be a minor issue for kids but adults get past that “magical feeling” for breaking block and controlling a ball more easily.
- This is the first time that I have to negatively comment on the tracking performance for a Virtual Air Guitar game. Reaching a ball that’s in the far edge corner can cause for some frustration, I didn’t experience this with the first Boom Ball so I’m a little confused about why the ball isn’t registering my hit. It luckily doesn’t happen much but it becomes an annoyance after three or four ball losses. Especially if you are going for a no ball lost play through. (The developer is investigating this rare issue, so I expect this to be solved in the near future)
Score: 74% | Boom Ball 2 for Kinect is a perfect game for kids and parents. I’m pretty sure that even a hardcore Gears of War player will enjoy swinging his arms on this game. Virtual Air Guitar continues to bring out good Kinect games, you can blindly trust them with what they bring out. It always stands for fun and quality.
